The Importance of Answering the Basic Question—Who Are You?

Back to Blog
Who are you? People with 1970s musical tastes might sing the chorus along with Pete Townshend and The Who (who-who, who-who). Others might think of barn owls and their calls in the night.

When you’re talking about background checks, however, “who” is vitally important. Identity must form the basis for everything that follows. Simply put, you have to know who you are looking into in order to ensure that the information that comes back is accurate—and that all relevant details are returned.

Starting Off Right

That’s why Asurint’s Verifynd product is the foundation for our IQLogics decision engine. Verifynd matches the individual’s supplied social security number (SSN) to third-party resources, such as credit bureaus and public utility databases, to find associated names and address histories. This information, in turn, helps point us (and our technology) in the right direction for criminal search options. The various names recommend potential aliases, which can further broaden the search.

By getting a better answer to the “who are you?” question, Asurint delivers more extensive and accurate results than other background search providers. In fact, we return 16-percent more records, on average, than a traditional single-county search—and our technology makes the process swifter and simpler, too!

Know More Before You Make the Offer

Employers are generally familiar with the I-9 verification and its restrictions. This check can only be conducted post-hire to validate a candidate’s SSN.

Today, it’s incredibly important to ensure that employees are legally authorized to work in the U.S. Confirming that candidate has a valid SSN can add a layer of certainty to the recruitment process. For this, organizations should consider the only SSN verification check possible pre-hire, consent-based social security verification (CBSV).

As the name indicates, CBSV requires the candidate’s consent, but it helps assure organizations that a job offer will be followed by a confirmation of legal work status once the I-9 is submitted.

A CBSV matches the SSN, name, and date of birth supplied by the individual with the SSN Master File. The corresponding report indicates whether there was a positive verification or whether the submitted information fails to align with Social Security Administration records. Importantly, a death indicator is reported when the SSN holder is deceased and couldn’t be applying for a job.

Information + Accuracy = Confidence

Knowing that the individual who sat before you in an interview is really who they say they are is an important step in the hiring process. It’s no time to rely outdated or incomplete methods.

Identity confirmation completed with accuracy and speed will help ensure that no stone is left unturned in the background screening process, that the results are comprehensive, and that no post-hire work status complications will arise. “Who” is a fundamental question, so why wouldn’t you want to get the answer right?
